Bait-Tech Angler – James Conway

James has been carp fishing for over 20 years and being based in the Lea Valley, has some fantastic waters on his doorstep. He does travel further afield for his angling and is just as happy on a small intimate lake as on a large open windswept pit.

With a young family and busy work schedule, his angling time is limited, meaning James has had to hone his skills for quick overnight sessions. Travelling light, super efficient rigs and top quality baits are all things that he feels make a big difference to short sessions.

Favourite methods: Stealthy marginal traps or 3 rods tightly fished on an accurately spodded area

Favourite Product: There’s too many to single out just one! Super Seed Hemp, Krill Pellets, Scopex Corn and Triple-N Boilies are all firm favourites of mine. Oh, and you can’t beat a bit of CSL liquid.

PBs: 41lb 3oz (UK) 47lb 12oz (France)

Favourite Venues: Bedfordshire Clay Pit

Top Tip: It’s an obvious one that has been said many times before, but ‘location is key’. Even with the best rig and bait in the world, if the fish are not in front of you, you’re not going to catch them. Use your eyes and do your homework to find where the fish are happy to feed.

Personal Future Goals: There’s a lot of negativity in angling these days, with people taking it far too seriously. For me it’s just a past time that I love doing, so my goal is to continue to enjoy my fishing as much as I always have done.

Achieved in Angling: All milestone fish were big achievements for me; my first double, 20lb, 30lb and 40lb fish all meant a lot. It’s not always about size though. There have been a few captures over the years that may not have been the biggest or a personal best, but for one reason or another, their capture was special and will always remain a personal achievement.
