When it’s Tough Going – Be Positive!
When bites are at a premium at this time of year, we wanted to know if there were extra tips and tricks you could employ to make the most of your sessions. We know our commercial fisheries hold plenty of fish but getting them to feed can be a very difficult prospect at times.
Grant is one of the very best at maximising any chances he gets to catch. His big list of achievements tell us so. We asked him why things get so hard at this time of year and can he help us put more fish in our nets?
‘Winter can be tough at the best of times. The key to catching at these times is to stay positive but think about your feeding very carefully. When I say positive, I always think I will get a few bites and that I am never far away from fish. If you believe there is fish in your peg, chances are you will get bites. If you think you’re not going to catch then you probably won’t!’
Regarding feeding, I always think about food content and how much I am putting in the peg. Pellets are great winter bait but they are a high food value item and need to fed very sparingly. I like to feed small nuggets of groundbait as this gives me maximum attraction with a lot less food value.’

Bait-Tech Kult Sweet Fishmeal is an amazing bait to use. Not only does it have the pulling power of our famous GPS90 but with added molasses it gives me a great chance of picking up skimmers as well as carp. Key thing to remember, catch everything, weigh more!

Feeding the Kult is kept in small nuggets. What I want is to just put enough in to spark a reaction from the fish. The tiny particles won’t fill them up and it’s incredible what you can catch over a ting nugget of bait. I will then top up when I feel the swim is drying up.
Three
The beauty of feeding this way is you can fish any bait over the top, maggots, pellets, even bloodworm! Bait-Tech Xpand pellets are my favourite hookbait as the soft texture and rich flavours are loved by all species.
Four
A hard winter day rewarded with a shy bite resulted in this beauty. I fed 3 swims and rotated them over the course of the day to winkle out a few bites. Stay active, think food content and catch over KULT!

Well said Grant being patient but positive worked for me yesterday ! Top man
