Meat Tip with Dave Roberts
Last tip I spoke about how I target chub and barbell on swollen coloured rivers. Typically, as I write this my beloved, mighty river Wye is at bank full level and chocolate brown in colour. Quite an awesome sight with unbelievable rage and power!
Those brave enough to tackle conditions such as this can be justly rewarded but as mentioned in my last tip you must think about how the fish will feed. The only possibility of fish finding bait in these conditions is by smell and the exact reason I switch to a meat based attack when the river is in this state. Bait-Tech N-Tice Meaty Mix and N-Tice Polony has a really pungent kick of garlic as well as other fish attracting herbs and spices that oozes out creating a scent trail that is a magnet to big fish. Fishing a big feeder with regular casting will soon pull the fish in.
One
I like to carry several tins of various meats, Bait-Tech N-tice Polony, the betaine packed Boosted Meat, Strawberry and Halibut flavours. All these work really well as hookbaits and as feed.
Two
I use a 14mm punch to carve my hookbaits. I sometimes use bigger as much as 25mm. big barbell will wolf down big chunks of meat and you can get away with massive pieces some days. I always hair-rig my baits as I believe I get better hook holds. Don’t forget, strong hooks are a must.
Three
My ‘go to’ bait! If there is one thing I always revert back to when in search of a bite it’s N-Tice Polony. They all have their day but this is No 1 for me. Awesome!
Four
As you can see this one enjoyed its meat banquet! Next time you’re faced with a challenging river situation, get on the meat and get bent in!
