A New Match PB – Nathan Gooderham

Nathan Gooderham visits Essex bagging mecca Arrans Lake Fishery to try and set a new Match Personal Best!

After having a couple of weeks break from match fishing I decided to head off to the prolific Arrans Lake located in Essex for some hectic fish race action where big weights were on the cards! The last time I visited here I managed 260lb which was some way behind the leader that day!

With the weather being so warm I was determined to try and better that today so I proceeded to go on an all-out attack of fishing short with a top kit down both edges as the fish seem to live close in! At the draw I picked out peg 11 which was 1 peg away from the favoured end peg down my end of the lake so I was up against it! I arrived at my peg at set my gear up and as I was doing so the carp were already “climbing up the bank” I decided to setup 1 top kit for both sides and alternate between the two, feed wise everything was kept simple, 1 bag of Bait-Tech Special G Gold mixed to a slop to create a cloud, hook bait was the ever faithful Bait-Tech Boosted Mighty Meat a Meat that I definitely recommend over your ordinary supermarket stuff as it is a lot tougher and stays on the hook for longer! The match got underway and from the off I was into the carp one a bung and was soon building a weight!

These matches have a half time weigh in due to the fish safety and amount of keepnets usually required! After the first 3 hours I managed to put 197lb onto the scales which I was quite pleased with! Half an hour passed and we were on our way again for the 2nd half of the match and you are usually looking to catch more in the second half as it usually fishes better as it gets later, which is usually the case at most venues you go to. The action continued thick and fast landing carp up to double figures with the odd one going over!

Anyway after another solid 3 hours it was time for another weigh in, this time I managed to put 220lb onto the scales for a total of 417lb! This was enough for 4th in the match with 719lb winning it but I have smashed by personal best record by over 120lb! A great day’s fishing and can’t wait to get back!
