Poloni vs Storm Barney

1I’ve been finding time to get out on the bank very limited over the last couple of weeks and when the opportunity of an over nighter came up, I couldn’t turn it down!

I checked the weather and it was looking optimistic for a bite in the limited time I had, with the temperature still mild for the time of the year and a nice low pressure. What passed my attention was the possibility of Storm Barney and its strong winds!

Arriving at the lake at 17.30 I was greeted with strong winds and darkness.

The swim I selected gave me access to a silty channel in 6ft of water, which I could fish accurately to in the conditions, I baited the swim with a kilo of 14mm Poloni straight out the bag.

I fished both rods on helicopter rigs and used fluorocarbon combi rigs with a 14mm poloni bottom bait tipped off with an incredible edibles coconut pop-up. I fished the rods a few feet apart at the bottom of the channel.

I settled down for the evening out of the wind, watching the water looking for signs of fish and didn’t see anything. I set the alarm for work as I had to be up at 1st light to be packed away and on my way to the office.

At 2.30 the left hand rod had a couple of liners and I was up and out standing by the rods willing them to come in to life and just as I had given up hope the right hand rod was away. After a good battle I landed a 16lb mirror and was over the moon to have had a fish in the net for the 1st time in a couple of weeks.

The rest of the night passed and I was soon packing up and away 1st thing.
